I just watched a really good program on tv about the necessity for beauty and the rise of the ugly, profane and functional. It reminded me of some old academic essays I wrote in my last year at varsity about a similar topic: the loss of morality and art. So I dug it out of a pile of crusty cds and gave it a read. Here is an excerpt

The aftermath in which we now live parades a downward degradation of personal integrity of passed ideologies and philosophies. We live in a world whose ideologies are at war with morality, a world whose values amount to chaotic relativity and a world whose art suffers from the same symptoms. Described broadly as a crisis of our age, in art and in humanity, postmodernism is a metaphorical corpse whose pungent odour has seeped into the crevasses of our entire existence; postmodern art is the corpse of art as postmodern morality is the corpse of morality.

Metaphorical corpse? Woah, I was in the zone! I remember loving this topic but feeling fearful at the thought of humanity on a slippery slope of immorality. I remember feeling a brief loss of hope when researching this topic in preparation for my essay. I suppose its easy to lose focus on hope when you’re immersed in hopelessness. The program I watched attempted to persuade viewers to bring beauty back into their world and credited it as sufficient enough to fill the god-shaped hole created by science. But it failed to outline the simple source of that beauty, the Creator of it all: God.

So, I seem to have rekindled the inspiration I got almost three years ago. I think this is a topic Id like to explore creatively.

I miss writing essays…I’d never thought I’d ever say that!
